Really liked this book. The elephant in the room is not only in the South, unfortunately. Barb gives up everything to save herself. Good read.

Beyond The Silence edition by Aya Walksfar Romance eBooks Reviews

Walksfar has a deep understanding of abuse and oppression and the complexities of family life and it shows through her writing. I loved watching the growth of her characters and appreciated that she wrapped up her story with hope, though not perfection. Well done!
A sensative well written book all women should read.
I was given this book to read and review.
Aya Walksfar always takes her subject matter head on. Whether she is writing about the child sex trade (Street Harvest) local hate and prejudice (Run or Die) or silent abuse (Beyond the silence), she doesn't flinch from telling it as it is.
Aya is an experienced writer with a good, strong style. Although her books are written for adults, nothing is gratuitous which makes their message all the stronger.
'Beyond the silence', tackles the world where women put up with their lot because that is what is expected of them from the society in which they live. Aya's characters, though diverse, are always engaging and you quickly sympathise with their dilemma, or cheer for their valour. In this case you get to do both. Barbara's story will take you on a journey through a 'country' you may not have visited before and will maybe give you an understanding of a subject that is still so misunderstood.
Barbara was in an abusive marriage and trying to live the southern philosophy of staying with her husband. Then she meets Yona who gives her the courage to take her daughter Jenny and leave her husband Ray. They go to live with Yona and Barbara begins a relationship with her. Ray threatens to use her lesbianism against Barbara to try and gain custody of Jenny. How far will Barbara go to protect her daughter and can she hang on to her relationship to Yona. This is an interesting, well written book.
* I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book has a different slant than I expected from the preview, but was still very worthwhile reading. The traditional culture of the Old South is something I know little about, so that in itself was an education; some of the characters were less carefully drawn than others Barb's father, for example, seems to have an unbelievably soft heart for as cruel as he can be.
Even so, the story was interesting and engaging, I kept wanting to find out what would happen next.
This book was gifted in return for an honest review; I'm glad to have had the chance to read it.
This was a very disturbing book. It was like opening a window to another person's soul. I have had many lesbian friends over the years, but I lived in both Monterey, California and in a town a few miles from Provincetown on Cape Cod, both very liberal areas. I have never met a lesbian from the Deep South. While Beyond the Silence is a work of fiction, Aya Walksfar stresses that is based on the experiences of many women. Barb Henson grew up in the South, married young, was sadisticly raped and beaten by her husband, and gave birth to a daughter. Her family supported the marital rights of her husband and her duty as a submissive wife. She finally flees with a friend and lover after admitting to her that she is also a lesbian. What follows is her struggle to survive and keep custody of her daughter. Walksfar conveys the horror many lesbians faced in the late 1980s. It was a shocking example of a reality I was unaware of. I was captured on the first page as my emotions became aroused by anger, compassion, and grief. The author has given me a new understanding of lives pushed to the fringes of society even today. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book, so raw, so real! Life is not perfect and sometimes we're dealt a crappy hand or two... or more, but those with some gumption will pull themselves up and move beyond those limitations or roadblocks. Barbara Sue Hensen, in Beyond The Silence, is one of those people. This is an artfully written book, all while tackling some really difficult issues, some of which many readers have faced. This is a very powerful story about a woman facing her truth and finding her voice. Beyond The Silence should be a 'must read' for any woman in an abusive relationship because it shows the true inner strength we all possess if we but take that first step; it should be a 'wanna read' for anyone who simply enjoys a great novel! This novel goes much deeper than the apparent initial relationships though and delves into cultural differences and multigenerational issues. Whether describing the beloved horses on the farm or the sites along the cross-country road trip, Aya Walksfar has a wonderful knack for utilizing broad brush strokes in depicting lush and rich visual word paintings. Aya is a prolific writer who is gaining another true fan in this reader! This is the second novel of hers that I've read and I already know I'll be adding more to that list. When I finished reading Beyond The Silence I wanted to cry out no, no! I wasn't ready to let go of a fictional character who seemingly had become a good friend. That is how a great author will leave you... wanting more.
Really liked this book. The elephant in the room is not only in the South, unfortunately. Barb gives up everything to save herself. Good read.
