A love story about Alzheimer's? How can an author join romance and mental illness into a compelling story about a publisher and fiction editor who meet early, part, and then reconnect in an intriguing professional and personal relationship twenty years later? Do Not Hurry the Journey takes fiction editor Paula Levitt and publisher Bill Walden on a voyage that tests life and love in ways few people experience. It is also a love story of giving and receiving that most people yearn for.

Do Not Hurry the Journey is a good read. I read it in two sittings. The protagonist, Paula Levitt, an independent, commitment-wary fiction editor, learns in later life to show up for her sister, who is living with cancer, and a former lover, who is facing the onset of Alzheimer's disease. This enjoyable novel left me thinking about issues of control, class privilege, and the art of care-giving.Product details

Once again Ellen Boneparth has captured my imagination and my heart with her warm and engaging new Novel, Do Not Hurry the Journey, set in the time of Alzheimer's! Her two Protagonists, Paula and Bill, are painted with a brush of a totally real life, down to what they eat every time they get together at home or at a lovely Restaurant. They could be your Family, your Friends, the folks next door! I almost always stay up late at night to finish Ellen's Novels, and this one has been no exception! The novel is a page turner because one comes to care deeply for these two people, and desires to see how they cope with the deeply troubling experience of Alzheimer's Disease, and yet maintain their loving relationship. Don't miss out! Go read it!
“Do Not Hurry the Journey” is a line from Cavafy’s beautiful philosophical poem "Ithaka." This novel explores Ithaka’s meaning for a deeply intelligent, sensitive, strong woman and the powerful and wealthy man she loves, who at 69 already knows that he already has Alzheimer’s disease. Its pathos and much of its interest comes from the contrast between their helplessness to cope with this terrible disease and their extraordinary power to make things happen that are beyond the imaginings of the 99%.
The author does an amazing job of portraying the tenderness of two people in love, woven with the struggle of a declining quality of life. Every page brings wonderful descriptions that allow you to get to know the characters intimately. I hope I never have to face these decisions, but if I do, I’ll be better prepared for having experienced the struggle through this book.
Ellen Boneparth’s new novel, Do Not Hurry the Journey, is a winner on several levels. The main theme of the book is a progressive Alzheimer’s disease afflicting the protagonist, in which the author informs the reader of little known humane solution offered in Switzerland. At the same time she manages to create an uplifting and tender love story throughout the book, along with a detailed description of the contemporary publishing world with all its complexity and competition.
Ellen is creative in the use of verbs that gives a distinctive voice to her writing. Here are a few examples “enveloped in wrinkles,” “tidal wave of employees,” “sunlight dancing on the water,” etc. Good work, Ellen!
