Improper English Katie MacAlister 9781504669818 Books Reviews

I was really surprised how much I didn't like this book. I'am a big fan of Katie MacKalister's, her dragon series is one of my favorites, and I have enjoyed reading some of her other contemporary romance's but this was just bad. One of the main thing's I didn't like about this book was the female and male leads had the same name. The Alix/Alex thing got old fast, and Alix the women one was so winy and annoying. My advice for what ever it's worth is to skip this book and try any of the others Ms. MacKalister has written.
I look forward to reading this author, so I was disappointed with this book. I could not like or root for the heroine as she humbled her way along. There were humorous moments but I did not understand how the people around her.... especially the hero...liked this self centered selfish person. In fairness, it was a story of the heroines growth, but it was nearly impossible to care if she succeeded or got the man of her dreams.
Ok...I liked the book and it had its moments. However, I really didn't like Alix sometimes I liked her at the beginning then not so much after that. Not just because of what she did sometimes. I mean some of the things she pulled were just hilarious. Its her thinking that was messed up and made me want to slap the crap out of her. I even thought that Alex should have let her go and not take her back I was that mad at her stupidity. How could she NOT think she was self centered and selfish? She didn't consider anyone's feelings about anything unless they included her in some way. How could she not have grasped that concept? Normally people who have a mother like Alix then she would act the opposite than what she did. Um no. Alix was a brat who was VERY selfish and self centered. It didnt make sense and I am not sure what the author was going for. I mean Alex wasn't perfect either but he's a guy and has his own issues. Which Alix didnt seem to care about UNLESS it affected her in some way....see where I am going with this? She was always thinking about herself. I dont think this author did her justice and painted her in a very negative way in my opinion. However, I have to give her props because I did like the book I just wish Alix was written a little different. I also think she had an OCD thing going on with her insane "lists". She had to hurt and break Alex's heart because of her list? Um...what? Her thinking made no sense to me on that front. Just sayin. I'm still on the fence about whether I would recommend this book or not. Some will like it and some will absolutely hate it. Will I read it again? Nope.
What happens when a feisty American writer and a stuffy drop-dead gorgeous British police inspector clash in London? Alix is trying to make it as a romance writer and this trip to London is her big shot. She may be American and had her share of heartbreak but she certainly isn't a thief. Alexander dislikes her from the moment she opened her sassy mouth but there's something about her that gets under his skin. Try as he might, she might just be what he needs.

I loved this romance so much! MacAlister has such a talent for humorous dialogue and snarkiness that it makes Improper English a must read! Move over Shopaholic, you've got to make room for Improper English!

My Rating 5 stars
There are a lot of conflicting reviews on this book and the author herself even talks about it in a foreword in the book, saying that some people love it and some people hate it because the main character is a bit of a hard pill to swallow. Take a step back before reading and know that the main character is much like Jane Austen's Emma who was fairly clueless in life, hence the movie Clueless, and you have Alix from Improper English right there. Then you need to see that the story is making light of itself. Throughout the book, Alix is writing her romance novel and you get snippets of it from chapter to chapter. These aren't really meant to be quite serious, they're meant to be a funny over the top version of a romance and to reflect how Alix sees things in her wacky life and romances.
And she is incredibly wacky. I cringe when people make asses of themselves and she seems to do it on a consistent basis, but really the humor in the book was so wonderfully dry wit that it reminded me of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker series. At some points I wasn't sure if the character was supposed to be taken seriously or not, like when she's teasing Alex during the car ride to Windsor Castle, but her words are so utterly playful that I couldn't see it as anything but teasing fun. Then there's the romance, besides her love life being just as wacky with things going wrong left and right, the intense moments between Alix and Alex are sizzling off the page.
So the story and writing are good, funny, and entertaining. But then there's Alix. I'm not gonna lie, she's an idiot and it's difficult to like her because she is selfish and so ridiculous. But, and yes there is a but, she's realistic. Not every romance book needs to have a perfect guy and a perfect girl, those can be boring. Alex is a great guy and maybe a bit stuffy though we see him open up very easily to Alix. And that's because Alix is so full of energy that it seems to draw him. Alex is almost perfect. Alix though is plagued by issues throughout the story. She's insecure about her writing, her love life, and her entire life. She's put down by her mother constantly on top of all that. When it's pointed out to her, it's too much for her to take and she pushes people away. But there is redemption for her, she does work on fixing her issues.
The only problem with the whole story is that it is told from Alix's perspective, but at the end, the author hides Alix's true intentions from the reader up until the final pages. It's done to give you the surprise, but in reality it's almost a cop-out for that surprise because our line into this world has been Alix's interior thoughts and to suddenly have those cut off from us is, like I said, a cop-out. And other reviewer's noticed, saying that the ending seems to quickly fixed up, but it's because those thoughts were hidden from us.

So, Improper English is funny, sexy, realistic, and wacky. It has humor and dry wit, a steamy romance, a sexy hero, and a wacky heroine that is realistically flawed and somewhat not likable though ultimately just like us and wants to be a better person and fix their flaws just like us.
